Charity Partnership
At Westmorland we have always had amazing staff that have put lots of energy into supporting various charities. Recently we decided to try to channel this energy into supporting one local charity, building a charity partnership for the next 5 years, which was selected by the workforce.
We decided to support Eden Valley Hospice, a local charity that has touched the lives of many local families, providing much needed care for the terminally ill throughout Cumbria. We have made a pledge to endeavour to raise £10,000 this year for the Hospice.
The Hospice has recently created a new wing for children; it is the only one of its kind in Cumbria and will provide vital care for those who need it. With the £10,000 we have pledged, we are looking to sponsor a play therapist.
We have made a great start to our fundraising with Eden Valley Hospice collection boxes at all our tills, holding staff raffles and taking part in exciting events such as the It's a Knock Out Challenge in July, and a Sponsored Swim in Lake Windermere in the chilly month of October!
We are always interested in new ideas on how to raise money for the hospice, and if you have any ideas or suggestions on how we can support the Hospice and raise even more money, please contact the HR department on 01539 711334. Shine Awards
We recognise our success depends entirely on our staff, and there are some staff that go above and beyond what is expected of them during the course of their work. So, we’ve introduced the Shine Awards to recognise and reward shining stars within the company.
Staff are encouraged to nominate their colleagues they feel show an outstanding commitment to their work. We have chosen awards that really matter to us as a business and the winners of each award are presented with £500 at the Christmas Party.
The Awards:
Creative Ideas Award Customer Service Award Beyond the Call of Duty Award Company Values Award Leadership Award Team Spirit Award Employee of the Year
We held our first Shine Awards Ceremony in December 2007

Bright Ideas
At Westmorland Ltd we know that many of our staff have great ideas for how we can make improvements around the business for both customers and our staff, and we are really keen to hear about these.
We have developed a suggestion scheme for those amongst us who are keen to share their idea’s. We have Bright Idea’s boxes so staff members can post their suggestions and we reply to every sensible idea providing feedback on the idea and whether or not we have been able to implement it.
Every 3 months the ideas are reviewed by a judging panel and a prize is awarded for the best idea received.

Westmorland Farm Shop Wins Major National AwardThe two Farm Shops were named 'Best Local Retailer 2003' in the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards. They were selected from several hundred nominations by Radio 4 listeners of Farming Today and the Food Programme. The Awards were announced at the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
The Farm Shops opened at the beginning of 2003 and are a partnership between a local farm and the motorway services. They are the first ever to open at a Motorway Service Station and are located on both the northbound and southbound sides of the M6 motorway at Tebay Services just off J38 in Cumbria - The Lake District.
Celebrating the region and its products has always been central to Westmorland's philosophy, so the Farm Shops were a natural extension. With Cumbria's reputation for fine local food and drink, the two Farm Shops are a superb example of what the county has to offer. Providing excellent local produce to visitors has earned the shops visits from a number of famous faces including Her Royal Highness Princess Anne and the famous TV Chef, Clarissa Dickson Wright.
