Our Environment

We are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such a beautiful environment and we want to ensure that we try our best to protect our surroundings, so as a company we are keen to implement green policies across all areas of our business.

Responsible Tourism Scheme at the Westmorland Hotel
This scheme recognises that the hotel has taken significant steps to reduce the operational impact on the environment and local community, which includes energy and water conservation, encouraging the use of public transport and reduction in waste generation by recycling and reusing.

Gold Conservation Award at the Westmorland Caravan Park
For 2 years running the Westmorland Caravan Park has won a David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award. These awards are made each year to parks which can demonstrate policies showing active concern for the environment - from the protection of animal and plant habitiats to the efficient use of energy and recycling.

We have introduced a number of initiatives such as sympathetic grass cutting regimes so we protect rare flowers such as the Northern Marsh Orchid. We have purposely left rough areas of rough grassland as a refuge for wildlife. A number of bird boxes and bird and squirrel feeders have been installed and sightings of red squirrels have been reported.  Fallen trees and logs have been piled up to provide a home for nesting robins, and a small wildlife pond has been created, where sand lizards have been spotted.

We have focused on energy efficiency by replacing heating timers with motion sensors, closely monitored the use of water and electricity and provided glass recycling bins for our customers.

Last year a total of £619.13 was collected from money dropped into the wishing well in the children’s play area at Tebay Southbound.  They money will be ‘splashed out’ on the ducks, by improving their environment.
